More than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, and OpenAI says search usage inside ChatGPT nearly tripled in the year to March 2026. ChatGPT now runs a web search on about a third of US prompts, and it cites roughly half of the pages it retrieves. Below are 32 numbered statistics on ChatGPT search usage, search triggers, referral traffic, citation behaviour and the crawler that decides eligibility. Each one comes from OpenAI or an original study, and all sources were read on 2 November 2026.
What are the key takeaways?
- ChatGPT reaches more than 1.2 billion people a week. OpenAI gave that figure on 21 October 2026, up from 700 million weekly users in July 2025.
- Search use is growing faster than the user base. OpenAI says search usage nearly tripled in a year. In NBER research, information-seeking rose from 14% to 24% of all messages.
- Search runs on about a third of prompts. Semrush clickstream data shows search enabled on 34.5% of US ChatGPT queries in February 2026, down from 46% in late 2024.
- Outbound clicks still grew. ChatGPT referral traffic to other websites rose 206% year over year, and Google is now the largest single destination at 21.6%.
- ChatGPT cites about half of what it reads. Ahrefs found that 88% of cited URLs come from search results, and that Reddit makes up 67.8% of the pages it reads but does not cite.
- Eligibility starts with one crawler. OpenAI says a site must allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search answers, and that placement is not guaranteed.
How many people use ChatGPT, and how many use its search?
ChatGPT had more than 1.2 billion weekly users in October 2026. It had 900 million in March 2026 and 700 million in July 2025. OpenAI does not publish a separate count of search users. It does say search usage nearly tripled in a year, and search has been open to everyone without signing in since February 2025.

When did ChatGPT search launch, and who can use it?
OpenAI launched ChatGPT search on 31 October 2024 for Plus and Team users. It opened to all logged-in users on 16 December 2024 and to everyone, without an account, on 5 February 2025. Today it is available on every plan, from Free and Go to Enterprise and Edu, and to logged-out users.

How often does ChatGPT actually search the web?
ChatGPT ran a web search on 34.5% of US queries in February 2026, according to Semrush's clickstream panel. That share has fallen from 46% in late 2024 and dropped every month from November 2025 to February 2026. Most prompts are still answered from the model alone, so your training-data footprint matters as well.

How do ChatGPT search prompts differ from Google queries?
ChatGPT search prompts are longer and less predictable than keywords. Semrush found search-enabled prompts grew from 4.7 to 8.7 words. Between 65% and 85% of prompts matched no keyword in a 27-billion-keyword database, so keyword tools alone miss most of the questions that decide whether you get mentioned.

How much traffic does ChatGPT search send to websites?
ChatGPT's outbound referral traffic grew 206% from January 2025 to January 2026 in Semrush's US panel. The number of sites it sends visitors to peaked at about 260,000 a month in October 2025. Google is the largest single destination, and the top ten domains take just over 30% of all referrals.

Which pages does ChatGPT search cite?
ChatGPT cites about half of the URLs it retrieves, Ahrefs found across 1.4 million prompts. Pages pulled from search results get cited 88.46% of the time, while Reddit threads are usually read and then dropped. Pages with descriptive slugs and titles close to the prompt wording get cited more often.

What decides whether a site can appear in ChatGPT search?
A site must allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt to be eligible for ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, the training crawler, is controlled separately, so you can block training and still appear in search. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply and that placement is never guaranteed.

How do ads change ChatGPT search results?
ChatGPT now shows ads on its Free and Go tiers in 89 countries, and OpenAI says ads are labelled and do not influence answers. The ads business passed a $1 billion annualised run rate in under 200 days. Organic mentions and paid placements now sit side by side, so you have to track them separately.

What do these numbers mean for brand visibility?
ChatGPT search is now a second front page for most categories. Usage is growing, prompts are long and conversational, and only about half of the pages ChatGPT reads earn a citation. If you can't find your brand in ChatGPT, the cause is usually crawler access, a missing page for the question, or competitors whose pages answer it better.
Three moves follow from the data:
- Check crawler access first. Confirm that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from search, but blocking OAI-SearchBot does.
- Write for the prompt, not the keyword. With most prompts matching no keyword, pages that answer a full buying question in plain words, with a descriptive slug and title, have the edge.
- Measure answers, not rankings. Our guide to checking if ChatGPT mentions your brand shows the manual method, and our AI brand monitoring tools guide compares the software options.

Where does Mentionova fit, and where does it not?
Mentionova runs your buyers' real questions through ChatGPT and other answer engines on a weekly, two-weekly or monthly schedule. Each run logs whether ChatGPT named you, whether it cited your domain, your position, the sentiment and every source it used. That shows you why AI cites your competitors and which pages to fix.
What it does well:
- Answers "why isn't my brand in ChatGPT?" You see which competitors ChatGPT named and which URLs it cited instead of you.
- Compares engines side by side. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI and Reddit are tracked, so you can tell a ChatGPT-only gap from a gap everywhere.
- Exports cited sources as CSV, grouped by URL or domain.
Limits worth knowing: it reports what ChatGPT says for the prompts you track, not every ChatGPT conversation. Starter is $99 a month billed annually ($125 monthly) with 25 tracked prompts and three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google). Scale covers all six. See pricing.

What do people ask about ChatGPT search?
How many people use ChatGPT search?
OpenAI does not publish a separate figure for search users. More than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week, and OpenAI said in March 2026 that search usage had nearly tripled in a year. Semrush data shows search runs on about a third of US prompts.
Is ChatGPT search free?
Yes. ChatGPT search is available on the Free and Go tiers, on paid plans and to logged-out users. It has been open to everyone without signing in since 5 February 2025. Ads now appear on the Free and Go tiers in 89 countries.
Where does ChatGPT search get its results?
ChatGPT rewrites your prompt into one or more search queries and sends them to third-party search providers, then adds content from news partners. Ahrefs found 88% of the pages ChatGPT cites come from search results, so strong ordinary search rankings still feed ChatGPT answers.
How do I get my website into ChatGPT search results?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, because OpenAI says that is what makes a site eligible. Then publish pages that answer specific buying questions directly, with descriptive slugs and titles. Track the prompts your buyers ask to see whether ChatGPT cites you, and remember OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.
Why isn't my brand showing up in ChatGPT?
The most common causes are a blocked OAI-SearchBot, no page that answers the exact question, or competitor pages that match the prompt more closely. ChatGPT cites only about half of the pages it reads. Look at the URLs it cites for your category to see what it prefers.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT search?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler and OAI-SearchBot is its search crawler, and OpenAI treats the two settings as independent. A site can block GPTBot and still appear in ChatGPT search answers as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
Is there a platform that tracks brand citations across multiple AI engines?
Yes. AI visibility trackers re-run the same buying questions on several engines and log mentions, citations and the sources each answer used. Mentionova covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI and Reddit, with a free trial and no card required.
