What are the key takeaways?
- Reddit leads four of five major AI surfaces. It holds 21.6% of Perplexity's top-50 mention share, 17.9% of AI Mode's, 16.8% of ChatGPT's and 28.5% of Gemini's, and 18.5% in AI Overviews behind YouTube (Ahrefs, September 2026).
- The number depends on what you count. Reddit appeared in 13% of ChatGPT search responses in Semrush's study, but was 1.8% of all ChatGPT citations in Profound's.

Why did ChatGPT's Reddit citations drop in August 2026?
ChatGPT changed how it searches on 8 August 2026. Two independent datasets show Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell by 86.4% and 91.9% within days. Elmo traced the change to a jump in site-scoped search queries. The drop shows how fast a citation source can disappear from one engine.

Reddit is the second most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews, at 18.5% of top-50 mention share behind YouTube's 22.9% (Ahrefs, September 2026). Profound found Reddit led AI Overview citations from August 2024 to June 2025. On shopping questions, Reddit appeared in 40.6% of overviews in PeakMetrics' test.

Reddit is AI Mode's most-cited domain, at 17.9% of top-50 mention share in September 2026, just ahead of YouTube at 17.8% (Ahrefs). Semrush found Reddit in 9% of AI Mode responses. AI Mode cites a wider spread of Google-owned and partner sites than ChatGPT does.

More than any other engine by share of citations. Reddit holds 21.6% of Perplexity's top-50 mention share (Ahrefs) and was 6.6% of all Perplexity citations in Profound's data, close to half of the citations among its top 10 sources. Perplexity also places Reddit higher in its answers.

Is Reddit the most-cited source across all AI engines?
On most of them. Profound ranked Reddit first overall across over 4 billion citations, and Peec AI's analysis of 30 million sources put Reddit first or second on every platform it tracked. Microsoft Copilot is the exception: Profound ranked Reddit 31st there, and Ahrefs does not list it in Copilot's top 50.

Which Reddit threads do AI engines cite?
Small, practical ones. In Semrush's study, 80% of cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes, and Q&A threads made up more than half of citations. Profound found the average cited post is a year old. Engines match the answer to the thread's content, not to the wording of the prompt.

What do these numbers mean for brand visibility?
When AI names a competitor instead of you, a Reddit thread is often the source. Reddit leads citations on four of five major AI surfaces, the threads cited are small and practical, and the share moves fast. A brand needs to know which threads the engines cite in its category, and watch for changes.
