The Gemini app reached 1 billion users in October 2026, up from 400 million monthly users in May 2025. Gemini's share of generative AI web traffic rose from under 9% to 27% to 28% in a year, while ChatGPT's fell to just over half. Below are 30 numbered statistics on Gemini usage, growth, market share, scale and citation behaviour, each tied to an Alphabet primary source or an original third-party study. All sources were read on 30 October 2026.
What are the key takeaways?
- Gemini hit 1 billion users in October 2026. Alphabet calls it the fastest-growing product in Google's history, up from 400 million monthly users at I/O 2025.
- Engagement grew faster than users. Daily requests grew more than 7x in the year to May 2026, and daily active users tripled in the year to July 2026.
- Gemini is the clear number two in AI traffic. Its share of generative AI web visits rose from under 9% to 27% to 28% between mid-2025 and May 2026 (Similarweb).
- ChatGPT still leads on reach in the US. 44% of US adults have used ChatGPT, against 24% for Gemini (Pew Research Center).
- Gemini relies on brand-controlled sources. 52.0% of Gemini's citations point to brand websites, and 81% go to sources a brand can influence (Yext, 155.5 million citations).
- Gemini links brands less often than it mentions them. It linked to Ahrefs in 16.8% of mentions, against 51.6% for Perplexity, in Ahrefs' single-brand study.
How many people use the Gemini app?
The Gemini app has 1 billion users. Alphabet reported 450 million monthly users in July 2025, 650 million in October 2025, 750 million in February 2026, 950 million in July 2026 and 1 billion in October 2026. That is more than double its size at Google I/O in May 2025, when it had 400 million.

How much do people use Gemini once they start?
More each quarter. Gemini app queries tripled from Q2 to Q3 2025, daily requests grew more than 7x in the year to May 2026, and daily active users tripled in the year to July 2026. Usage per person is rising faster than the user count, so Gemini answers are becoming a habit.

What share of AI chatbot traffic does Gemini hold?
Gemini is the second-largest AI chatbot by web traffic. Similarweb measured its share of generative AI web visits rising from under 9% in mid-2025 to 27% to 28% by May 2026, while ChatGPT fell from around three-quarters to just over half. In US survey data, ChatGPT still leads on reach.
- Gemini's share of generative AI web traffic rose from under 9% to 27% to 28% between June 2025 and May 2026. ChatGPT's share fell from around 76% to around 53%, and Claude's rose from 2% to close to 9%. Source: Similarweb, generative AI statistics, 29 July 2026.

- 49% of US adults now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024. Source: Pew Research Center, 11 June 2026.
The 30 to 49 age group is where most B2B buyers and household decision-makers sit. A third of them use Gemini.
How big is Gemini behind the scenes?
Gemini is now the model layer under Google's AI products. Google's products processed more than 3.2 quadrillion tokens a month by May 2026, up from 480 trillion a year earlier, and Google's model APIs handle nearly 32 billion tokens a minute. Gemini also powers AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini Enterprise.
- Monthly tokens processed across Google grew from 480 trillion at I/O 2025 to more than 3.2 quadrillion at I/O 2026. Two years earlier the figure was 9.7 trillion. Source: Google I/O 2026 keynote.
- Google's first-party model APIs process nearly 32 billion tokens a minute, up 40% from the previous quarter and more than four times a year earlier. Source: Alphabet Q3 2026.
- Gemini serving unit costs fell 78% over 2025. Source: Alphabet Q4 2025.
- More than 120,000 enterprises use Gemini, with more than 8 million paid Gemini Enterprise seats, as of February 2026. Source: Alphabet Q4 2025.
- Nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise, and more than 9 million developers build with Google's models each month. Source: Alphabet Q2 2026.
- Gemini 3.5 Flash is the default model in Google AI Mode globally. Source: Google, "A new era for AI Search", 19 May 2026.
This is why "Gemini visibility" is broader than the Gemini app. The same model family writes the answers in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which together reach billions of searchers.
Which sources does Gemini cite?
Gemini leans on sources a brand controls. In Yext's analysis of 155.5 million citations, 52.0% of Gemini's citations pointed to brand websites, and 81% went to websites or listings a brand can influence. That makes Gemini more responsive to your own pages than engines that favour forums and media.
- 52.0% of Gemini's citations went to brand websites, across 155.5 million citations for 1,623 brands and four AI models in Q1 2026. Source: Yext Research, AI citation behaviour across models.
- 81% of Gemini's citations came from influenceable sources, meaning websites plus business listings. Source: Yext Research.
- Gemini produced 48.4 million of the citations in Yext's study, second to Perplexity's 53.3 million and ahead of OpenAI's 34.9 million. Source: Yext Research.
Yext's questions were location-grounded, such as finding a nearby service, so the brand-website share reflects local and service queries. For citation patterns across all engines, see our LLM citation statistics.
How often does Gemini link when it mentions a brand?
Rarely by count, often by reach. In Ahrefs' study of more than 31,000 mentions of its own brand, Gemini included a link in 16.8% of mentions, against 51.6% for Perplexity. Weighted by impressions, Gemini's linked share rose to 71.3%, so its high-visibility answers usually carry the link.
- Gemini linked to the brand in 16.8% of its mentions, against 26.9% for ChatGPT, 36.8% for Google AI Mode and 51.6% for Perplexity. Source: Ahrefs, Mateusz Makosiewicz, AI citations vs impressions.
- Weighted by impressions, 71.3% of Gemini's brand mentions included a link, second only to Perplexity at 78.4%. Source: Ahrefs.
- Gemini usage skews technical, closer to Claude than to ChatGPT, and Gemini's paid search spend is the second-largest of the four assistants Similarweb compared. Source: Similarweb, 2 August 2026.
The Ahrefs data covers one brand, so treat it as a pattern, not a benchmark. The lesson holds: a mention without a link still shapes a buyer's shortlist, so count mentions, not only clicks.
What do these numbers mean for brand visibility?
Gemini is now too large to skip when you check AI visibility. It has 1 billion users, holds the second-largest share of AI traffic, and its model writes Google's AI answers. Because Gemini cites brand websites heavily, a brand missing from its answers usually has a page or listing gap it can fix.
Three moves follow from the data:
- Check Gemini separately from ChatGPT. Shares and source preferences differ, so a strong ChatGPT result does not carry over. Our guide to checking if ChatGPT mentions your brand shows the method; repeat it on Gemini.
- Fix your own pages and listings first. With 52.0% of Gemini citations going to brand websites, clear product, pricing and location pages are the fastest lever.
- Track over time. Usage per person grew faster than users, so the same prompt is asked more often each quarter, and answers change between runs.

Where does Mentionova fit, and where does it not?
Mentionova runs your buyers' real questions through Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Reddit on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedule. Each run logs whether Gemini mentioned you, whether it cited your domain, your position among its sources and the sentiment, and keeps the history.
What it does well:
- Answers "why isn't my brand in Gemini's answers?" You see the competitors Gemini named and the URLs it cited instead of you.
- Compares engines side by side, so you can tell a Gemini-only gap from a gap everywhere.
- Exports every cited source as CSV, which shows the pages and listings to fix first.
Limits worth knowing: it reports what Gemini says for the prompts you track, not every conversation in the Gemini app. Starter is $99 a month billed annually ($125 monthly), covers three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google) and does not include Gemini; Gemini needs a plan with all six engines, such as Scale. See pricing, or compare options in our AI brand monitoring tools guide.

What do people ask about Gemini?
How many people use Google Gemini?
The Gemini app has 1 billion users, Alphabet said on 28 October 2026. It had 950 million monthly users in July 2026 and 400 million at I/O in May 2025. Separately, 24% of US adults say they ever use Gemini, per Pew Research Center.
Is Gemini more popular than ChatGPT?
Not yet. In Pew's February 2026 survey, 44% of US adults used ChatGPT and 24% used Gemini. Similarweb shows the gap closing: Gemini's share of generative AI web traffic rose to 27% to 28% by May 2026, while ChatGPT's fell to around 53%.
Is Gemini the same as Google AI Mode?
No. Gemini is Google's AI model family and the standalone Gemini app. AI Mode is a conversational answer inside Google Search that runs on Gemini models, with Gemini 3.5 Flash as its default since May 2026. Each can name different brands for the same question.
Does Gemini cite its sources?
Yes. Yext counted 48.4 million Gemini citations in Q1 2026, 52.0% of them pointing to brand websites. Ahrefs found Gemini linked to the brand in 16.8% of its mentions, rising to 71.3% when weighted by impressions.
How do I get my brand mentioned in Gemini?
Start with pages and listings you control, since 81% of Gemini's citations in Yext's data came from websites and business listings. Make product, pricing and location facts clear, then track the prompts buyers ask to see which competitors and sources Gemini prefers.
Why does Gemini recommend my competitors and not me?
Gemini cites the pages that answer the question most directly. If a competitor's site or listing states the facts plainly and yours does not, Gemini names them. Check which URLs it cites for your category's buying questions, then close the gaps on your own pages.
Does Gemini send traffic to websites?
Yes, though it links in fewer mentions than Perplexity or ChatGPT. Gemini visits usually appear as referral traffic from gemini.google.com in your analytics, while Google AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks count as Google organic.
