Google AI Mode went from a Labs experiment in March 2025 to more than 1 billion monthly users in May 2026. Its queries are three times longer than classic searches, and it cites the same URLs as AI Overviews only 13.7% of the time. Below are 30 numbered statistics on AI Mode usage, rollout, clicks, citations and brand mentions, each tied to a Google primary source or an original third-party study. All sources were read on 30 October 2026.
What are the key takeaways?
- AI Mode reached 1 billion monthly users in about a year. Google reported more than 100 million monthly users in the US and India in July 2025 and more than 1 billion globally at I/O in May 2026.
- Queries keep compounding. AI Mode queries more than doubled every quarter after launch, and Google says it drives incremental growth in total Search queries.
- People ask longer, richer questions. AI Mode queries are three times longer than traditional searches, and one in five AI Mode searches now uses voice, images or documents.
- Clicks are scarce. In Semrush clickstream data, only 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions led to a visit to another website.
- AI Mode is its own surface. It cites the same URLs as AI Overviews only 13.7% of the time (Ahrefs), so ranking in one does not guarantee the other.
- Brand strength matters most here. Of ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode, AI Mode showed the strongest correlation between brand web mentions and AI visibility, at 0.709 across 75,000 brands (Ahrefs).
How many people use Google AI Mode?
Google AI Mode has more than 1 billion monthly active users. Google first reported 100 million monthly users in the US and India in July 2025, then 75 million daily users in October 2025, then crossed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026. Alphabet repeated the 1 billion figure in its July 2026 earnings.

| Jul 2026 | 1B+ monthly users confirmed; merged with AI Overviews into one experience | Alphabet Q2 2026 |
Usage on this scale puts AI Mode next to ChatGPT as a place buyers form a shortlist.
How fast did AI Mode roll out, and where is it available?
AI Mode moved from a Labs test to a global product in seven months. Google opened it to paying AI Premium subscribers in March 2025, launched it in the US in May 2025, added more than 180 countries in English in August 2025, and reached 40 languages by October 2025. Gemini 3.5 Flash now powers it by default.

- Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default model in AI Mode globally in May 2026, and Personal Intelligence in AI Mode expanded to nearly 200 countries and territories across 98 languages. Source: Google I/O 2026.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode now run as one experience, with follow-up questions from an AI Overview flowing into AI Mode. Source: Alphabet Q2 2026.
The merger matters for tracking. A buyer who sees an AI Overview and asks a follow-up lands in AI Mode, so the same journey can name different brands at each step. Our Google AI Overview statistics cover the first step.
How do people search differently in AI Mode?
AI Mode queries are three times longer than classic searches and far more likely to use voice, images or documents. Google says one in five AI Mode searches is now multimodal. Planning and brainstorming queries are growing fastest, which means buyers ask for shortlists and recommendations instead of typing a keyword.
- AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches. Source: Alphabet Q3 2026.
- The average AI Mode query was 7.22 words, against 4.0 words for traditional Google search, in US desktop clickstream data from May to July 2025. Source: Semrush, Luke Harsel, 30 July 2025.
- AI Mode query length grew from 8 words in June and July 2025 to 10 to 11 words in August 2025, in Similarweb data from more than 100,000 AI Mode users. Source: iPullRank, Garrett Sussman, 26 September 2025.
- One in five AI Mode searches globally uses voice, images or documents. In February 2026 the figure was nearly one in six. Sources: Alphabet Q3 2026; Alphabet Q4 2025.
- Image searches in AI Mode were growing more than 40% month over month in the US. Source: Google, AI Mode US insights, 19 May 2026.
- Planning-related AI Mode queries grew 80% faster than AI Mode queries overall over six months, and brainstorming queries grew 30% faster since launch. Searches starting with "where to", "where should I" and "ideas for" are rising. Source: Google, AI Mode US insights.
"Where should I" is a recommendation request. When a buyer asks it, the answer names a handful of brands, and the rest are invisible.
How many clicks does AI Mode send to websites?
Very few per session. Semrush found only 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions led to a visit to another website, and Similarweb data analysed by iPullRank put the external click rate under 3%. Google says its AI features send billions of clicks a week in total, but no independent study shows AI Mode matching classic Search on clicks.
- Only 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions ended in a visit to an external domain, so 92% to 94% were zero-click, across 69 million US desktop Google sessions from May to July 2025. Source: Semrush.
- External clicks from AI Mode stayed below 3% from May to August 2025 in Similarweb panel data. Source: iPullRank.
- AI Mode referral visits averaged 3 to 4 pageviews and 2.5 to 4 minutes, against 6 pageviews and 5 minutes for visits from Google Search. Source: iPullRank.
- Google says it is "sending billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search." Source: Alphabet Q2 2026.
- AI Mode clicks are not reported separately. Google counts AI Mode and AI Overviews traffic inside the "Web" search type of the Search Console Performance report. Source: Google Search Central, "AI features and your website".
Point 23 is the measurement gap. Search Console tells you that a click came from Google, not whether an AI answer named you first. Our zero-click search statistics show the same pattern across all of Google.
Which sources does AI Mode cite?
AI Mode cites a different set of pages from AI Overviews. Ahrefs found the two cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, even though their answers mean the same thing 86% of the time. Semrush found AI Mode shows a sidebar of links in 92% of answers, averaging seven unique domains.
- AI Mode and AI Overviews cited the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, and 16.3% for the top three citations, across 540,000 query pairs from September 2025. Their answers reached 86% semantic similarity. Source: Ahrefs, Despina Gavoyannis, "AI Mode vs AI Overviews".
- 92% of AI Mode responses included a sidebar of links averaging seven unique domains, against three for AI Overviews, across 5,000 keywords and more than 150,000 citations. Source: Semrush, Eugene Levin, 21 July 2025.
- AI Mode's sidebar links matched Google's organic top 10 on 51% of domains and 32% of URLs, so most cited pages do not rank on page one for the same query. Source: Semrush.
- Wikipedia appeared in 28.9% of AI Mode citations, against 18.1% in AI Overviews, and only 3% of AI Mode answers had no citations, against 11% of AI Overviews. Source: Ahrefs.
Similarweb's US citation analysis adds a second view: in AI Mode, Fandom leads the most-cited domains, ahead of Wikipedia and YouTube, while ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia and Reddit. Source: Similarweb, "What Is AI Citation Share", 11 June 2026. For cross-engine citation patterns, see LLM citation statistics.
Which brands does AI Mode mention?
AI Mode mentions more brands than AI Overviews but rewards the brands that are already well known. Ahrefs found AI Mode names 2.5 times more people and brands per answer, and across 75,000 brands it showed the strongest link between brand web mentions and AI visibility of the three engines it tested.
- 34.66% of AI Mode answers mentioned no brand, against 59.41% of AI Overviews. AI Mode answers were four times longer and named 3.3 entities on average, against 1.3. Source: Ahrefs.
- Branded web mentions correlated with AI Mode visibility at 0.709, against 0.664 for ChatGPT and 0.656 for AI Overviews, across 75,000 brands. Branded search volume correlated at 0.466 for AI Mode, against 0.352 and 0.392. Source: Ahrefs, Louise Linehan, 12 December 2025.
- AI Mode linked to the brand in 36.8% of its mentions of Ahrefs, against 10.7% for AI Overviews and 26.9% for ChatGPT, in a study of more than 31,000 mentions of a single brand. Source: Ahrefs, Mateusz Makosiewicz, AI citations vs impressions.
Ahrefs' conclusion was blunt: AI Mode "looks like the hardest to crack without established brand recognition." If your brand is missing from AI Mode, the cause is usually off-site, in reviews, community threads and third-party lists, not on your own pages.
How should you read Google's numbers next to third-party data?
Read them as two different measures. Google reports monthly users and query growth across every device and country. Third-party panels track narrower samples, often US desktop. Similarweb said in July 2026 that AI Mode usage grew fast early and then levelled off, while Google reported continued growth the same month.
Both can be true. Google counts everyone who touches AI Mode, including people sent there from an AI Overview follow-up. Similarweb's panel measures visits to the AI Mode surface itself. Source: Similarweb, generative AI statistics, 29 July 2026.
Three rules for using these numbers:
- Treat Google's usage figures as reach, not clicks. A billion monthly users says how many buyers can see an AI answer, not how many visit your site.
- Treat clickstream studies as direction, not totals. The Semrush and iPullRank samples date from 2025 and skew to the US.
- Measure your own prompts. Citation overlap between AI Mode and AI Overviews is 13.7%, so category averages say little about your brand.
Where does Mentionova fit, and where does it not?
Mentionova runs your buyers' real questions through six AI engines on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly schedule and logs every mention, citation, position and sentiment. On Google it tracks AI Overviews. It does not report AI Mode as a separate engine, and it does not show Google's own AI Mode traffic data.
What it does well:
- Answers "why isn't my brand in AI answers?" Each run shows which competitors were named and which URLs the engine cited instead of you, so the off-site gap is visible.
- Tracks the engines next to Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Reddit, so you can see whether a gap is Google-only or everywhere.
- Keeps history. Every run is stored, which matters when AI citations shift from one run to the next.
Limits worth knowing: Starter is $99 a month billed annually ($125 monthly) and covers three engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google), with 25 tracked prompts. Gemini needs a plan with all six engines, such as Scale. Compare options in our AI rank tracking tools guide or see pricing.

What do people ask about Google AI Mode?
How many people use Google AI Mode?
More than 1 billion people a month. Google announced the milestone at I/O in May 2026, one year after the US launch, and repeated it in Alphabet's July 2026 earnings. In October 2025 AI Mode had more than 75 million daily users.
Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
No. AI Overviews appear above search results, while AI Mode is a full conversational answer. Ahrefs found they cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time. In 2026 Google merged them into one experience, with AI Overview follow-ups opening in AI Mode.
Does Google AI Mode send traffic to websites?
Some, but little per session. Semrush found 6% to 8% of AI Mode sessions led to an external site visit. Google says its AI features send billions of clicks a week across Search, but it does not break out AI Mode on its own.
Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
Not separately. Google counts AI Mode and AI Overviews clicks and impressions in the "Web" search type of the Performance report, mixed with classic results. You cannot filter Search Console to AI Mode only, so prompt tracking fills the gap.
How do I track my brand's visibility in AI Mode?
Run the questions your buyers ask and record which brands and URLs each answer names, on a fixed schedule. Because answers change between runs, one manual check is not enough. Compare results with ChatGPT and Gemini to see whether the gap is Google-specific.
Why does AI Mode recommend my competitors and not me?
Ahrefs found AI Mode has the strongest link to brand web mentions of the engines it tested, at 0.709. Competitors with more reviews, list placements and community mentions get named first. Find the pages AI Mode cites, then earn a place on them.
Which AI model powers Google AI Mode?
AI Mode launched on a custom version of Gemini 2.0 in March 2025, moved to Gemini 3 in late 2025, and has used Gemini 3.5 Flash as its default model globally since May 2026, according to Google.
