Because the Overview sits above the organic links, it can decide which brands a searcher considers before they scroll. Tracking it over time shows how much of your search demand Google answers directly, and whether your site is one of the sources it relies on or is being passed over for other pages.
To optimize for AI Overviews, start from the pages Google already cites for a query and ask what they answer that your page does not. The cited pages are the benchmark, because they are what Google chose to rely on. For every query you track: whether Google showed an AI Overview, the text of the answer, each source it cited, and whether your domain was among them. It also shows where you rank in the organic results below, so you can find the pages that rank but are left out of the answer, and prioritize those first.
