Ask ChatGPT for "a good plumber near me" and it estimates your city from your IP address and rewrites the question into a local search. Google's AI Mode will even call businesses to check prices. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 found 45% of U.S. consumers used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6% the year before. Below are six AI visibility tools that show whether those answers name your business, location by location, with every price and feature read from the vendor's own page on 4 November 2026. We make Mentionova, one of the six; it has no location-level tracking, and we say where that matters.

What are the key takeaways?

  • Location-level tracking is the dividing line. BrightLocal, Local Falcon, Yext Scout and AthenaHQ describe tracking per location. Most brand-level trackers work per country.
  • BrightLocal is the cheapest all-in-one. Local AI Visibility is included on Track, Manage and Grow, from $41 a month for one location ($31 billed annually), with up to 20 prompts per location on ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.
  • Local Falcon maps AI answers across a grid. It runs the same prompt from 9 to 441 points across your area on ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews and Grok, from $24.99 a month for 7,500 credits.
  • Yext Scout and AthenaHQ target large footprints. Yext prices by location count on annual terms; AthenaHQ says it covers 10 to 10,000 locations.
  • Mentionova tracks the prompts, not the map. Starter is $125 a month ($99 annual) for 25 prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, with briefs, CMS drafts and Reddit threads, but no geo-grid or per-location scores.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI recommend local businesses?

Each engine localizes the question first, then picks businesses from its own sources. ChatGPT infers an approximate location from your IP address and may share it with third-party search providers. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Search and Business Profile data, and Gemini in Google Maps reads reviews and place data.

What the platforms say on their own pages, read on 4 November 2026:

Platform How it handles a local question What it draws on Source
ChatGPT search Uses an approximate location from your IP address; may rewrite "good restaurants near me" into "top restaurants San Francisco"; maps can appear on iOS and Android Third-party search providers and "trusted third-party providers" for nearby business listings; reservations via OpenTable, Resy or Yelp OpenAI Help Center
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode No extra requirements beyond normal SEO; Google lists keeping Business Profile information up to date among its best practices Indexed pages eligible for a snippet, plus Business Profile and Merchant Center data Google Search Central
Google AI Mode Finds appointments and home services, checks prices and stock, and can call businesses when details are not online Web results plus calls; results from calls can take up to 30 minutes Google Search Help
Gemini in Google Maps (Ask Maps) Conversational answers to place questions, personalized by places you searched or saved Information from more than 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors Google, 12 Mar 2026

Google rolled out AI calling to local businesses across the U.S. in July 2025; businesses control it in Business Profile settings. More figures: Google AI Mode statistics.

How many customers use AI to find a local business?

Nearly half do. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a panel of 1,002 U.S. adults, found 45% used AI tools for local business recommendations in the past 12 months, up from 6% in 2025. ChatGPT led at 31%, followed by Google's AI Mode at 23%.

What BrightLocal's two 2026 consumer studies found:

Finding Figure Study
Consumers who used AI for local business recommendations in the past year 45% (6% in 2025) Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, n=1,002
Used ChatGPT for a business recommendation 31% Same
Used Google AI Mode for one 23% Same
Adults aged 30 to 44 who asked AI for a recommendation 64% Same
Active AI users who trust AI recommendations 63% Same
Used AI tools during their most recent local search 23% Consumer Search Behavior 2026, n=1,227
Use AI for local recommendations at least monthly 31% Same
AI users who felt ready to contact the recommended business directly 18% Same

The last row matters most. AI builds the shortlist; BrightLocal found most AI users went back to Google or another channel to verify before deciding.

Why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

Usually because the sources the engines read favor a rival. In BrightLocal's study of about 200,000 non-branded localized prompts across more than 1,300 locations, Google Business Profile was the most cited source, Yelp was second, and ChatGPT overlapped with Google's AI surfaces on only about a fifth of businesses.

Findings from BrightLocal's local AI visibility study (September 2026), covering ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews:

  • Maps still beats AI. Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches, against 38% for AI Overviews, 33% for ChatGPT and 32% for AI Mode.
  • Google Business Profile leads the sources. It drew 563,272 of 1,967,762 citations, and Yelp 187,599. BrightLocal says GBP is hardly used by ChatGPT.
  • Your website still counts. Business websites made up 93% of unique cited domains and 42% of all citations.
  • The engines disagree. AI Mode and AI Overviews shared 29% of named businesses; ChatGPT, 19% to 20%.
  • Answers move. A business that appeared once reappeared in about half of later attempts (58% on AI Overviews).
  • Storefronts edge out service-area businesses, at a 33.6% mention rate against 29.4%.

The fix list: a complete Business Profile, Yelp and directory listings, and a website that states services, areas and prices in plain text. To check one prompt by hand first, see How to check if ChatGPT mentions your brand.

What should a local AI visibility tool track?

A local tool should run prompts from the customer's location, score each location separately, name the local competitors that win, and show which directories and review sites the engines cite. Brand-level trackers cover sources and competitors but usually set location by country, which misses how answers change across a town.

Capability Why it matters for a local business Tools that list it (vendor pages, 4 Nov 2026)
Per-location score Shows which branch wins and which never appears BrightLocal, Local Falcon, Yext Scout, AthenaHQ
Geo-grid sampling Answers change from one neighborhood to the next Local Falcon (9 to 441 points)
City or state targeting Lets a brand-level tracker run prompts below country level Promptwatch Business
Local competitor list Names the rivals that take your recommendations All six
Directory and citation gaps AI leans on GBP, Yelp and listings sites BrightLocal (AI sources leaderboard), Yext Scout (agents update listings)
Maps beside AI Compares map-pack rank with AI mentions Local Falcon, Yext Scout
Content and fixes Turns a gap into a page or listing change Yext Scout, AthenaHQ, Mentionova (briefs and CMS drafts)

Which tool fits which local business?

Single-location owners and small chains start with BrightLocal or Local Falcon. Franchises and brands with hundreds of sites compare Yext Scout and AthenaHQ. Brands that also sell nationally can use Promptwatch Business for city tracking, and teams that want content and Reddit work added can use Mentionova.

Is BrightLocal the best AI visibility tool for a single location?

BrightLocal includes its Local AI Visibility Tracker on Track, Manage and Grow at no extra cost. Track is $41 a month for one location, or $369 a year. It runs up to 20 branded or unbranded prompts per location on ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, weekly, monthly or on demand.

Each location gets a 0 to 100 score by platform and prompt, a competitor comparison with mention rate, share of voice and average position, and an AI sources leaderboard. Prices scale by location count: Track is $104 a month for 11 to 20 locations and $524 for 91 to 100; above 100 is priced on request.

Is Local Falcon the right pick for service-area businesses?

Local Falcon fits businesses whose visibility changes across a service area. It runs one prompt from every point on a grid, from 9 (3x3) to 441 (21x21), on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Grok, and maps where AI names you. One credit is one grid point.

Starter is $24.99 a month for 7,500 credits, enough for 300 five-by-five scans. Pro is $99.99 for 31,250. Reports compare Share of AI Voice with Share of Local Voice on the map, plus brand phrases, sources and competitors. Falcon AI analysis costs 25 credits per report, and unused monthly credits expire.

Is Yext Scout worth it for multi-location brands?

Yext Scout suits brands with many locations already managing listings at scale. It tracks Google Search, Google Maps and AI Overviews plus ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity, compares each location against its 20 closest competitors, and lets agents update listings, respond to reviews and create content.

Yext prices most solutions as location count times a unit rate, billed annually, with better rates for multi-year terms. Yext says it is built for large multi-location enterprises and points smaller businesses to its reseller partners. Scout data is also available through the Yext API and MCP.

When is Promptwatch the right local choice?

Promptwatch is a brand-level tracker that reaches below country level on its Business plan: $579 a month for 350 prompts, 42,000 responses, five projects, up to hourly tracking, and state and city level tracking. Business also adds Shopping Insights and Ads Radar, and is sold through a demo.

Lower plans track at country level; Essential is $95 for 50 prompts. It suits regional brands that also need national AI visibility. See Promptwatch alternatives for its trade-offs.

Does AthenaHQ handle hundreds of locations?

AthenaHQ's multi-location solution describes location-level recommendation tracking, monitoring of hours, services and contact details in AI answers, and benchmarking across locations and markets. It says the platform works "whether you have 10 locations or 10,000".

Its pricing page lists a free Essential tier with 300 credits and Starter at $295 a month for 3,600 credits across 11 models, with country-level support; one credit is one AI response. The pricing page does not tie location-level tracking to a plan, so confirm scope with sales before you budget.

Where does Mentionova fit for a local business?

Mentionova tracks the buying prompts you write, such as "best family dentist in Mississauga", and logs whether you were named, where you placed, who was named beside you and which sources the engines cited. Starter is $125 a month ($99 annual) for 25 prompts on ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google; Scale is $400 for 100 prompts on six engines.

Gaps come with briefs, and pages push to WordPress, Webflow, Ghost, Sanity or a webhook as drafts. The Reddit tab drafts replies to cited threads; Mentionova never posts for you. It lists no geo-grid, per-location score or Business Profile integration.

How much does local AI visibility tracking cost?

For one location, Local Falcon starts lowest at $24.99 a month in credits and BrightLocal at $41 ($31 annual) with listings and rank tracking included. Promptwatch's city tracking starts at $579. Yext prices by location on annual contracts, and AthenaHQ ties no location feature to a listed plan.

Footprint BrightLocal Track (monthly) Local Falcon Yext Scout
1 location $41 Starter $24.99 for 7,500 credits Custom
6 to 10 locations $83 Credits scale with grid size, prompts and locations Custom
41 to 50 locations $261 Same Custom
91 to 100 locations $524 Premium $199.99 for 63,150 credits Custom
100+ locations Price on request Enterprise from $499/mo for 157,000 credits Custom

Local Falcon's bill depends on grid size: a 9x9 grid uses 81 credits per prompt scan, so the same budget covers far fewer scans at high resolution. For agency pricing across clients, see AI visibility tools for agencies.

Where does Mentionova lose for local businesses?

Mentionova loses on location data. It has no geo-grid, no per-location score, no Business Profile or directory integration and no Google Maps comparison. It also refreshes weekly by default and does not track Google AI Mode. Businesses that need branch-level reporting should start with BrightLocal, Local Falcon or Yext Scout.

  • No location layer. BrightLocal scores each location from $41 a month; Mentionova runs the prompts you write, and naming the city in the prompt is the closest it gets.
  • Engines. Starter covers ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. AI Mode, which can call businesses on a customer's behalf, is not on Mentionova's engine list.

It wins on the work around the listing: briefs, CMS drafts and Reddit threads. For regulated local services, see AI visibility tools for law firms.

How do you set up AI visibility tracking for a local business?

Start with 10 to 20 prompts per location written the way customers ask, mixing "near me" requests, service-plus-neighborhood questions and comparisons. Run them from the location itself, weekly or monthly, alongside your map-pack rank, and judge trends over several runs, since AI answers change between attempts.

  1. Write customer prompts, branded and unbranded. "Emergency boiler repair open Sunday in Leeds" beats "boiler repair".
  2. Localize the run. Use a tool that anchors queries to the location, or name the city in the prompt. OpenAI advises users to add a city or postal code when local results show the wrong area.
  3. Fix the sources first. Complete your Business Profile, get listed on the directories AI cites, and keep services and hours current on your site.
  4. Judge over weeks. In BrightLocal's study only about half of businesses reappeared on repeat runs, so one check proves little.

What do people ask about AI visibility tools for local businesses?

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

OpenAI says sites must allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl them to be eligible, and that placement is not guaranteed. ChatGPT also uses third-party providers for nearby business listings, and BrightLocal's study ties ChatGPT closely to Yelp. Keep your site crawlable and your Yelp and directory listings complete.

Does Google Business Profile affect AI Overviews?

Google lists keeping Business Profile information up to date among its best practices for AI features, with no special markup required. In BrightLocal's study, Business Profile was the most cited source across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews combined, mostly on the two Google surfaces.

What is the cheapest way to track local AI visibility?

Local Falcon Starter is the lowest listed price at $24.99 a month for 7,500 credits, with 100 free credits on signup. BrightLocal Track at $41 a month ($31 annual) adds listings, rank tracking and audits, with 20 AI prompts per location included.

Can AI visibility tools track each location separately?

Yes. BrightLocal scores each location, Local Falcon maps each one on a grid, and Yext Scout benchmarks each against its 20 closest competitors. Brand-level tools such as Mentionova, Otterly and Peec AI do not list per-location scores.

Why does ChatGPT recommend different businesses than Google?

They read different sources. BrightLocal found ChatGPT overlapped with Google's AI surfaces on only 19% to 20% of named businesses, and that it barely uses Google Business Profile. OpenAI's help center lists Microsoft among its search providers and Yelp among its reservation partners.

How often should I check local AI visibility?

Weekly or monthly is enough for most businesses. BrightLocal offers weekly, monthly or on-demand runs, Local Falcon offers Quick Scans and Campaign Scans, and Mentionova refreshes weekly. Answers change between runs, so read several results before acting.

Is Mentionova a good AI visibility tool for a local business?

For per-location data, no: it has no geo-grid or location scores. It fits local brands that want to track the buying questions customers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, find the Reddit threads AI cites and publish the service pages the engines lean on.
